Why StreetWise is So Critical

As the labor market continues to shift, it has become clear that the US workforce does not have enough workers and skilled candidates to fill an ever-increasing number of highly-skilled jobs. To address the skills shortage, employers need access to new pipelines of talent. This requires recruiting from non-traditional labor pools: the city college educated, immigrants, and people with unconventional career paths. While recruiters and hiring managers are beginning to adjust their recruitment practices and hiring procedures to avoid overlooking skilled talent, many companies are struggling to find these candidates.

That is where StreetWise comes in.

For nearly 27 years, StreetWise has served as one of the only workforce development mentoring programs for adults in the country. We have core capabilities that drive excellence at what we do:

  • We know how to establish deep partnerships with community organizations, hard skills training programs, colleges, and corporations.

  • We know how to bring people together to develop new skills through mentorship.

  • We know how to build meaningful community and social capital for mentees and mentors.

  • We know how to train volunteers to be good mentors and future managers who advocate for equitable and unbiased hiring practices.

As a result of our mentorship program, on average:

Who We Serve

We are one of a small handful of workforce organizations across that country that is focused on adult mentorship and social capital building. We specifically target unemployed or underemployed graduates of city colleges and certification programs or graduates with degrees from foreign countries who have a common challenge - they lack the critical social networks that shape career plans and prospects. Despite their qualifications and determination, they have been unsuccessful in obtaining roles that offer living wages, benefits, and upward mobility.

On average, 95% of our talent pool are people of color, two thirds are under 25 years of age, half are in the process of obtaining their bachelor's degrees, and average annual personal income upon entering the StreetWise Bridge program is under $13K. To create a pipeline of young adults who need our services, we collaborate with more than 25 workforce development and hard skills training organizations such as Per Scholas, Year Up, KIPP, Upwardly Global, NPower, The English Speaking Union, Camba, Cooper Union, East River Family Strengthening Collaborative, Skyland Workforce Center, Byte Back, Upwardly Global, Merit America, Pathfinders, Worksource Montgomery, Virginia Career Works. We also work closely with Prince George's Community College, University of the District of Columbia, Trinity Washington University, Montgomery Community College, and CUNY schools such as Lehman School of Business, Baruch College, Brooklyn College, and others.

Meet StreetWise Bridge

In November 2023, we launched a new brand name and logo for our program. Since 1997 we have served more than 10,000 adults with our program, as a bridge to:

  • connect unemployed and underemployed people with career opportunities

  • unite learners and workers

  • close the opportunity gap

This is the foundation we are built on and the inspiration for formalizing our program with a brand and logo: StreetWise Bridge.

StreetWise Bridge perfectly captures the spirit of our mission and the career journey our job seekers follow as they gain a mentor and build a bridge to their success. The StreetWise Bridge program provides our mentees, job seekers and alumni with the career exposure and professional networks they need to secure in-demand jobs. The program operates in three phases:

  1. Navigating the StreetWise Bridge: Each participant (mentee) is paired with up to two volunteers (mentors). Over 13 weeks, the pairs create career maps, design resumes, build Linkedin profiles, develop elevator pitches and practice interview skills.

  2. Activating the StreetWise Bridge: Mentees–now called job seekers—apply their new skills and resources to secure employment. This phase includes nine months of continued mentorship and personalized support from our Talent Services team who connect them with open jobs and internships at global companies.

  3. Beyond the StreetWise Bridge: Upon employment, we support program graduates with ongoing mentorship and advancement support through monthly events that cover topics such as DEI, imposter syndrome, negotiation, managing upward and managing laterally.

In today’s job world, professional skills and networks are just as important as education but are not distributed equally. Factors like where you grow up and go to school and whether your parents are college educated can make a significant impact — 12 times the advantage, — in gaining access to opportunity. StreetWise Bridge helps to level that playing field through career exposure, experiential learning, problem solving, industry knowledge, and building social capital. We envision a society where hard work and self-determination is enough for job and career success.

Program Impact Statistics

As we continued to grow and adapt to the changing workforce, economic and societal shifts following the pandemic, we had great progress in the impact we track across our two service areas.

In 2023, we saw the following impact across our regions.

Moving Stories of Success

Aigerim, Alumnus

Born in Kyrgyzstan, Aigerim came to the U.S. with her family when she was 10 years old. Her experience as the eldest child helped her parents and siblings figure out how things worked in the U.S., like taking the SATs to get into college. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from CUNY School of Professional Studies, and after school wasn’t progressing to late-stage interviews for jobs she really wanted. In Spring 2022, Aigerim joined StreetWise as a mentee with specific goals: 1) to improve her interview and communications skills; 2) to expand her network; and 3) to secure a job in finance. With the help of StreetWise and her mentor, she achieved all three. Now she is happily working at JP Morgan Chase and is the first woman in her family to be in a corporate career.

“My mentor helped me practice questions and research the role and company. I’m grateful to have a mentor who fully supports me and cheers me on.”

Louis, Alumnus

When Louis Soto Ciprián joined StreetWise Partners as a mentee, he had been in and out of homeless shelters for three years. Growing up in the inner city and going through the foster system, Louis Soto “lost it all multiple times at an early age,” he shares. A broken leg had ended his hopes for a basketball career. He was struggling in college and working odd jobs. And still, he wanted so much for himself. When Louis joined the StreetWise Partners program, he was paired with two mentors working in different fields — management consulting and IT infrastructure — who helped him develop his professional character. He learned how to articulate himself in a professional setting, including creating talk tracks, delivering his elevator pitch, and developing the charisma he needed to have relevant conversations and network. Louis also gained the core skills of how to write a resume and prep for a job interview. Today, years later, he’s a successful Enterprise Account Executive for Zappos at Work (ZAW).

“StreetWise uplifted me by providing me with the opportunity to gain access to a community of mentors, career preparation, corporate networking events, and personal growth.”

Krystal, Alumnus

Krystal Lian grew up in a Chinese-speaking family and community in Brooklyn and is a first-generation college student. While attending Baruch College, Krystal took on a part-time job at the A+ Academy learning center, where she also communicated in Chinese. Although she could speak and comprehend English, Krystal still lacked the confidence to use it fluently. As a rising junior Krystal was intrigued when she heard a speaker talk about someone getting an internship thanks to StreetWise. She researched the program, applied, and was accepted. With the support of StreetWise, Krystal learned how to communicate in different settings, prepare for interviews, and network — all of which built her skills and confidence. After two successful internships in finance, she is now preparing for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) introductory-level finance exam and looking for her first full-time role post-graduations.

“I am so thankful I joined StreetWise. I was introverted, very shy, and didn’t know how to communicate very well, so it was eye-opening to learn how people speak in the professional world.”

Mercy, Alumnus

In 2015, Mercy Umanzor Martine’s entire family came to the U.S. from El Salvador. She had to stay behind because her application wasn’t approved. All she could do was wait — and focus on her career. She continued working in procurement and pursued additional education, including a Master’s Degree in Supply Chain Management & Logistics. Then when Mercy was approved to come to the U.S., she wasn’t able to become employed until she got her work authorization documents. While she waited, she enrolled in English classes and, based on a tip from her sister, signed up for the StreetWise mentoring program in Washington, D.C. She thought it would take a long time to get a job in the field she loves. She was wrong-- StreetWise Partners helped her quickly land her dream job as a procurement manager before she even graduated from the program.

“StreetWise opened my eyes to new approaches to achieving my career goals. It helped me realize that my knowledge and experience are transferable and that I can land my dream job here in the U.S.”

Alain, Alumnus

Originally from West Africa, Alain Coulibaly came to the U.S. with an impressive academic and professional background. He had a Master’s Degree in Environmental Health, Safety, and Quality Management, multiple certifications, and years of experience working in his field. Despite his qualifications, he struggled to find a job where he could use those skills. Then he joined the StreetWise Partners mentorship program in Washington, D.C. — and three months later, landed a role as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist. He says he’s a new person now — so much more comfortable and confident interacting with people. In addition to working in his new role, Alain is completing an MBA at the University of Maryland Global Campus to improve his management skills. He is always trying to be better and figure out how to make things work for his career and his family.

“StreetWise changed my life in the U.S. in just three months.”

Olga, Alumnus

Ukraine was Olga Potapova’s home. It’s where she lived and where she had a successful career as an accountant. But in December of 2022, she left her country to escape the war and came to the U.S. Everything was brand new — the language, the culture, the job search. But that didn’t hold her back. Shortly after moving in with her daughter and son-in-law in Bethesda, Maryland, Olga heard about StreetWise, a free, one-year mentoring program to help people like her navigate the U.S. job market. She knew right away that it was exactly what she needed. With the support of StreetWise Partners, she learned the skills she needed to find a job in the U.S. and keep working as an accountant in a career she loves.

“Without StreetWise, it would have been really difficult to break into the professional world. I am so grateful that the program exists and that I participated in it. It helped me understand the job search and get a job.”

The Opportunity Pledge

In September 2023 during Workforce Development Month, we announced The Opportunity Pledge; a public commitment companies are making to build an inclusive and diverse workforce.

The Opportunity Pledge is an open call for organizations to commit to advance economic equity in the workforce. Companies contribute to The Opportunity Pledge in three ways: by making a tax-deductible financial contribution to StreetWise Partners to reach more jobseekers, by making a commitment to hire StreetWise Partners’ graduates, and through in-kind donations such as lending office space for in-person programming.

The Opportunity Pledge offers employers a proven program to attract talent while growing a diverse workforce. Forward-thinking organizations have joined the pledge to publicly mark their commitment. Early adopters of The Opportunity Pledge included Erickson Immigration Group, Symphony, Mizuho, Tradeweb, TIAA, Global Atlantic Financial Group, and The Ready Foundation.

The Opportunity Pledge is an ongoing campaign and commitment, grow along with us and your peers and reach out today to join and sign the pledge!

Driving Investment and Scale: a $1M Gift from Global Atlantic Financial Group

In June 2023, Global Atlantic Financial Group invested $1M to fuel the organization’s strategic goals and deepen their commitment to our programs and the mentees and job seekers we serve. Beyond dollars, Global Atlantic committed volunteer resources and internships within the company. Since 2020, they have hired 14 StreetWise graduates as interns, three of whom have converted to full-time jobs.

We also honored them with the StreetWise Champion award at our Annual Partnership Breakfast and debuted a video highlighting our deep, holistic partnership with the firm and several StreetWise program alum.

This year we are working together to place four more candidates into internship roles in Summer 2024.

“At Global Atlantic, we devote a substantial number of resources to attract, retain and develop exceptional talent. The talent coming out of StreetWise is impressive and their enthusiasm for learning is unparalleled. The social impact that StreetWise is having is tremendous, and so we are doubling down on our commitment.”

Dan O’Shea,
Chief Administrative Officer at Global Atlantic

CEO Prize from HSBC

In January 2023, StreetWise Partners was awarded the Involve CEO Prize by HSBC’s CEO in recognition of StreetWise’s strong leadership and volunteer engagement program. In four years, over 200 HSBC volunteers have participated in StreetWise events, supporting 500 mentees through special workshops such as: The Race and Corporate America series, the Black Experience in the Workplace and the Asian Experience in the Workplace, How to Make a Strong First Impression at Work, and Combatting Imposter Syndrome.

Petrie Foundation Grant

In 2023 we were honored to receive a renewed investment from The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation which aims to increase economic opportunity by strengthening college and career pathways for low-income New Yorkers.  The Foundation supports innovative programs and practices that improve readiness for and connection to higher education, enable students to thrive and succeed in college, and increase access to high potential careers upon graduation.

Community Partner Profile: Lehman College School of Business

Over the past year, StreetWise has formed a deep collaboration with the Lehman College School of Business. The School of Business, with departments in Accounting, Management and Business Innovation, and Finance, Information Systems, and Economics, launched July 1, 2022, followed by an official opening ceremony on September 15, 2022.

Lehman College School of Business is committed to educating students in business competencies through innovative and experiential learning-based programs. It provides high-quality transformative education in partnerships with businesses in the Bronx, the rest of New York City, and beyond, to a diverse group of students. Over the past year, the StreetWise Bridge program has helped students connect their education to work, providing them with valuable professional exposure.

"You can't be what you can't see. StreetWise shows our students what is possible by bringing them to Manhattan, connecting them with mentors and helping them set tangible career goals".

Lawrence Fauntleroy,
Director of Experiential Learning

Improving Program Efficiency

In September 2023, StreetWise launched a new learning management system through Canvas. Benefits to this new system include:

With Winter 2023 and Spring 2024 cohorts supported by the system, the program has gained efficiency, process, and workflow benefits.

We Expanded The Team

In 2023, we expanded our team to support and reinforce the areas of our strategic plan needing additional capacity and investment to drive growth. We grew our Fundraising, Talent Services and Program teams, and added a new member to our Board of Directors.

Expanded Fundraising team

Sherrie Streit Ager
Chief Development Officer

  • Sherrie (she/her/hers) is a skilled team leader, advisor and strategic philanthropy specialist, with extensive experience in the fields of media, strategic fundraising and non-profit management. She recently held leadership positions at UNICEF USA, where she managed the New York regional market and then expanded their fundraising nationally into new markets. She also held leadership roles at International Crisis Group and Independent Diplomat, where she served as Chief Development Officer.

Sherrie brings nearly 20 years of fundraising experience working with non-profit institutions in the fields of international development, education, health, conflict resolution and social advocacy. Sherrie held leadership fundraising roles with two private independent schools in Manhattan, where she served as Deputy Director of Development. Sherrie served as an executive consultant with CCS Fundraising, a fundraising consulting firm that manages fundraising campaigns for non-profits. During her time at CCS, Sherrie managed several capital campaigns and development initiatives, including playing an integral role in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s $200 million dollar capital campaign.

Before her career in fundraising, Sherrie worked in the media sector as a reporter and producer, covering international business, economics, and international politics. Sherrie earned her Master’s Degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and Bachelor’s Degree from George Washington University.

Liliana Cepeda
Development Coordinator

  • Liliana Cepeda (she/her/hers) first joined the Streetwise Partners community as a mentee in the NYC program in 2020. Her time as a mentee allowed her to recognize her passion for supporting her community and interest in working within the nonprofit sector. She recently graduated from Baruch College with a Bachelors in Business Administration, majoring in Entrepreneurship. Liliana is excited to give back to the Streetwise Partners community and work towards the mission of advancing economic equity for underrepresented communities. Liliana also enjoys reading and traveling!

Expanded Corporate Partnerships Team

Ori Balaish
Corporate Engagement Manager

  • Ori Balaish (he/him) is a proud Israeli American, having obtained not only an undergraduate degree in Psychology with a Minor in Film Studies from Lafayette College but also a Masters Degree in Global Public Health from Imperial College of London. Presently, he is concluding a graduate program that will culminate in a Master’s degree in Global Public Health, emphasizing Health Equity. Ori embarked on his journey with Streetwise Partners in July 2023 and has since held the role of Corporate Engagement Manager. With diverse professional experiences ranging from his role in the Special Education Division for the NYC Department of Education to his pivotal position at the New York State Department of Health, Ori is deeply committed to Streetwise Partners' mission and its community. Born & raised in New York, Ori champions the belief that diverse communities should be reflected in our workplaces. When he's not advocating for economic equity, Ori immerses himself in the world of film and storytelling, spends time reading and writing, indulges in stand-up comedy and live sports, and passionately works towards breaking mental health stigmas.

Umama Sarwat
Corporate Engagement Manager

  • Umama (she/they) graduated from California State University Fullerton, with a major in Criminal Justice, but quickly realized she wanted to be involved directly in bettering her community instead of continuing the cycle of systemic oppression. She started her professional career as an Americorp VISTA with an organization that helped train at-risk youth in Compton, CA, and determined that nonprofit fundraising and development was her professional calling. She worked in LGBTQ+ rights spaces and peacebuilding spaces as well, but wanted to get back to helping people find their professional footing. As a first generation immigrant, Umama feels a program like Streetwise is vital for many people like her to establish connections, as well as learn how to navigate the professional sphere. In her downtime, Umama loves to read, travel, try different restaurants in DC and gardening. Umama is also a polyglot and lived in four different countries growing up.

Expanded Talent
Services Team

Elizabeth Balder
Senior Director of Talent Services, NY & DC

  • Elizabeth (she/her/hers) first came to Streetwise Partners as a volunteer in June 2022, and she first joined the team as a contractor in March of 2023. She officially joined SWP as the Senior Director of Talent Services in September of 2023, she leads talent services in both NYC and DC. Elizabeth spent the last 6 years in talent acquisition for various tech companies, including LinkedIn. Prior to her time in TA, she spent almost 10 years with various non-profits including Girls on The Run, The American Cancer Society and The American Heart Association. Her focus was on corporate development, fundraising and leadership.

She graduated with a BS in Psychology from Grand Valley State University, she also holds certification as a Diversity Professional from Northwestern University. She lives with her family in Chicago and is an avid walker (and sometimes runner!), as well as a volunteer for many other non-profit organizations.

Lyra Yang
Program Coordinator

  • Lyra (she/her/hers) joined StreetWise Partners in May 2023. She currently provides administrative support for the program, assists with mentee/mentor recruitment and employment services. Hailing from China, Lyra holds an MFA degree in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University and has worked as an educator and writer before joining StreetWise. As an artist, she strives to promote visibility and equality for marginalized communities, and she feels very privileged to be a part of StreetWise, where she can contribute to making this a reality in the workforce. Outside of her professional and artistic pursuits, Lyra enjoys traveling, meeting new people, and binge-watching her favorite shows.

New Board Member

Colin Smith
SageSure

  • Colin Smith is the Chief Operating Officer of SageSure, the country's largest residential property insurance MGA, where he is responsible for identifying and executing strategies for the company’s continued growth. Colin oversees strategic planning, financial planning, and corporate development efforts - including raising over $800 million of capital from institutional investors. Colin served as the Executive Director of the NYC nonprofit Change for Kids from 2009 to 2017. At CFK, he increased revenue 25x, built a robust network of over 3,000 individual donors and corporate sponsors, and supported nearly 5,000 elementary school students annually. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees at the Congregational Church of New Canaan, and has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Virginia.

Volunteerism

Volunteerism is the cornerstone of the StreetWise program model. Every year hundreds of corporate professionals dedicate 10,000 hours of service as volunteers, mentors, and through networking events and workshops. Volunteers support StreetWise mentees with skill building, networking, career exploration, job searching, interviewing, navigating the hiring process, and more. Volunteers contribute to and nurture the sense of community for StreetWise mentees, and also gain from the community as it flourishes. As a result, volunteers develop their own leadership and management skills and gain access to professional leaders, professional development workshops, networking opportunities, and more.

Volunteers participate in the program for one-day events, according to their interests and availability. It is a wonderful way to contribute to the mentee's career trajectory and gives shorter bursts of high-value interaction and activities.

StreetWise offers a variety of volunteer opportunities that vary based on time commitment and interest. These include:

Mentor

Volunteers are paired with a mentee to provide valuable professional and soft skill development to support job search and engagement. Mentors provide coaching and hands-on training. Volunteers can renew their involvement in each cycle. This is a year-long commitment. The program is currently being conducted virtually and in-person.

One-Time Volunteer

Volunteers can participate in one-time events including mock interviews, and speed networking. These events give our mentees a chance to practice their skills and gain feedback and allow volunteers to have a meaningful high-impact short-term volunteer experience. These events are currently being hosted in-person and are 2.5 hours each.

Lead Volunteer

Mentors who have volunteered for two or more cycles can serve as a Lead Volunteer and are responsible for presenting curriculum and overseeing a group of mentor/mentee pairs. They develop exceptional leadership and organizational skills and strong facilitation/presentation skills.

“I wanted my mentee to know that she’s not alone in this process and that she has a community that believes in her and wants her to do her best.”

Maya,
Volunteer and Mentor

“My mentors were always available to give me advice and share their knowledge. They were phenomenal in the ways they taught, supported, and encouraged me.”

Drita, Alumnus

“My mentor showed me a lot of new platforms and taught me how to be really organized. He really shaped me into a more mature, responsible person. I learned how vital an internship is and how important it is to allow you to grow in your own career. I was just really lucky to score him as a mentor.”

Yajaira, Alumnus

“I want to uplift my community. My community is underserved and it’s just because we lack certain resources. I’m big on how I can motivate and speak life into people like me, and help them bridge that gap like StreetWise Partners did for me.”

Jamar, Alumnus

Raising the Ante Poker Tournament

On November 9, 2023, more than 300 people gathered at SPIN New York to invest in mentorship and spend a night playing poker at our 14th annual Raising the Ante charity poker tournament. The tournament raised a record $533,000 including sponsorships, donations, rebuys, and silent auction bidding for the tournament.

Thank you to everyone who came, played, donated, bid on the silent auction, drove attendance, and sponsored this year’s tournament. See you next year, when we‘ll aim even higher to support our vision to create the most diverse, empowered and capable workforce for today and tomorrow.

Annual Partnership Breakfast

Our Annual Partnership Breakfast on June 8, hosted nearly 300 people who helped us raise over $370,000, which will be used to transform the lives of another 500 individuals in the coming year. Our mission was on full display at the breakfast through stories of transformation from former mentees.

We honored Qasim Isphahani with the Outstanding Mentorship Award. Qasim has volunteered with StreetWise for eight years, officially mentored 10 job seekers, and touched the lives of over 100 graduates.

“I feel that I take away a lot more from these mentoring relationships than I give,” said Qasim. “I feel energized after every session and every event. Being engaged in StreetWise programs and witnessing the transformation that mentees have made and continue to make during the process has made me a believer in this movement.”

Thank you to everyone who was and continues to be a part of our success at the Annual Breakfast. We'll see you again soon!

Financial Overview

StreetWise ended the year with a surplus of $1.1M, having achieved ambitious revenue goals to support our strategic plan, and connecting more individuals to opportunity. The organization maintained a healthy cash balance throughout the year and maintained a Board Reserve Fund to support future program innovation and long-term sustainability.

We also received $163K in-kind support.
