Celebrating National Mentoring Month: Alumni Perspective on Why Mentoring Matters
By StreetWise Partners
For National Mentoring Month we asked five alumni who are now mentors with StreetWise to tell us why mentoring matters. They shared their stories full of wisdom and perspective, hoping to inspire more of you to join us in 2025!
As we honor National Mentoring Month, it is essential to reflect on the profound impact mentorship has on individuals and communities. It is not just a one-way street; at its best mentorship creates a cycle of growth, where former mentees return as mentors, sharing their experiences and insights to guide the next generation of mentees. This blog post explores the value of mentorship through the voices of a few alumni who experienced its power firsthand when they were mentees.
Why Mentorship Matters
Many former mentees find themselves compelled to return as mentors, driven by a desire to pay it forward. LaVonda shared, “After completing StreetWise Partners, I realized the power of having someone believe in me. I wanted to support others in developing their management skills, just as I had received.” This sentiment echoes a common theme among many who transition from mentee to mentor: the transformative nature of support and belief from others.
Saron reflected on her journey, stating, “The mentorship I received was transformative in shaping my career trajectory. It provided invaluable networking opportunities and helped me uncover a stronger version of myself.” This underscores the idea that mentorship is not merely about professional guidance; it is also about personal growth and self-discovery.
The Mindset Shift
Returning as a mentor often involves a significant mindset shift. For many, it is about recognizing the benefits they have received and wanting to share those with others. Stevie articulated this beautifully: “StreetWise has changed my life in profound ways, from finding my passions to finally getting my master's degree. I would not be satisfied walking away with all those blessings without being able to pass them on.” This sense of responsibility to help others reflects a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of how careers, dreams and support all come together through mentorship.
Developing Leadership and Management Skills
Mentoring is not just beneficial for mentees; it also plays a crucial role in developing the leadership and management skills of mentors. Many mentors have noted that through their mentoring relationships, they have enhanced their self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and communication skills. LaVonda explained, “Learning how to provide constructive feedback on one's strengths and areas for improvement and how to effectively convey ideas, provide guidance and listen empathetically- are key traits for leaders and managers. These are a few ways mentoring has developed my leadership and management skills.”
Muieen agreed about the main benefits of mentoring and his leadership skills, “It helps me develop empathy and create a safe environment, which is extremely useful when nurturing talent from all walks of life.” Further he explained, “Mentoring helps my management skills as it relates to managing and developing interns. I wanted to pay it forward with the mentorship I received.”
Stevie shared, “Mentoring helps me develop leadership skills by fostering continuous engagement with my StreetWise mentee and identifying areas for growth. Turns out that I grow too during the process.” This reciprocal relationship enriches both parties, as mentors learn to listen actively and adapt their communication styles to meet the needs of others.
The Long-lasting Impact on Mentees
The benefits of mentorship extend far beyond the immediate relationship. Former mentees often describe long-lasting impacts that shape their careers and lives. LaVonda expressed, “StreetWise transformed the way I approach my career, my goals, and my life. It challenged me to grow and pushed me outside my comfort zone.” This growth often leads to increased confidence, enabling mentees to navigate obstacles and seize opportunities they might not have recognized before. Jalen pointed out, “I have also noticed an improvement in my problem-solving skills. My mentor encouraged me to think critically and approach challenges from different perspectives, which has proven essential in my career.”
Stevie highlighted the importance of advocacy, stating, “My StreetWise mentor helped me learn how to advocate for my needs and wants. Having a mentor provided me with a safe space to receive support and validation.” This foundational support not only ignites personal growth but also encourages mentees to extend their support to others, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
The Heart of Service
A common thread among those who have experienced the benefits of mentorship is the commitment to service. Saron shared, “Mentorship instills the heart of service, fostering a lifelong commitment to helping others.” This idea of paying it forward is a powerful motivator, as mentors recognize how even small gestures can make a significant difference in someone else’s life.
The connections made through StreetWise often lead to expanded professional networks, opening doors to job opportunities and collaborations. Jalen remarked, “The connections I made through my mentor have opened doors to invaluable insights from industry leaders.” Further, “I have also noticed an improvement in my problem-solving skills. My mentor encouraged me to think critically and approach challenges from different perspectives, which has proven essential in my career.” With these comments, Jalen highlights how StreetWise supports individual growth and strengthens the professional community.
