As our celebration of National Volunteer Month draws to a close, we’re featuring the inspiring story of one mentee who found so much at StreetWise Partners, that he returned to volunteer as a mentor this Spring. 

In the vibrant borough of Queens, New York, a young man named Chika embarked on a remarkable journey that would shape his future. Growing up in a family that valued education and hard work, Chika always had a spark of curiosity. Chika’s mother is a nurse and guided his work ethic and desire to be a good human being. He and his siblings are the first generation in their family to attend college. Originally drawn to urban sustainability, he found his true passion in computer science while attending Brooklyn College. It was during this pivotal time that he discovered the StreetWise program, a decision that would change his life forever. 

Chika's introduction to StreetWise came from a discussion with fellow first-generation college students who shared his aspirations for self-improvement and networking.

"StreetWise was a game-changer for me," he recalls. "It provided a personal touch that my college experience lacked. While my school offered resources, StreetWise connected me with mentors who guided me through the complexities of the job market."  

In the spring of 2022, Chika joined StreetWise Bridge as a mentee. He quickly realized that the program was more than just a steppingstone; it was a launchpad for his career. With the support of his mentor, Chika honed his professional skills and gained insights that would accelerate his arrival in the tech industry. "My mentor was blunt and action-oriented," he explains. "That’s what I needed. The quicker we addressed challenges, the faster we could find solutions." 

Today just three short years later, Chika is not only a successful integration engineer at Tradeweb but also a StreetWise mentor in the very program that once guided him. "I wanted to give back," he shares. "StreetWise had such a positive impact on my life, and I know there are others who can benefit from it too." His decision to mentor stems from a deep-seated desire to invest in and boost others who have similar needs and challenges. 

As he reflects on his journey, Chika emphasizes the various aspects of mentorship. "It’s not just about providing guidance; it’s about building a network and forming genuine connections," he states. His own experience with StreetWise taught him that the act of giving can be just as rewarding as receiving. "You never know how your support might change someone's life," he adds with conviction. 

In his current role at Tradeweb, Chika thrives in a collaborative environment that mirrors his values. "The people here are phenomenal," he says. "We work hard, but we also have fun. That’s what makes a job fulfilling." His passion for problem-solving continues to drive him forward, as he tackles complex projects and develops innovative solutions. 

Chika's dedication and ambition extend beyond his professional life. Outside of work, he is an avid martial artist, practicing various disciplines such as kickboxing, wrestling, and judo. This creative outlet not only provides him with balance but also fuels his ambition. "Martial arts teach discipline, perseverance and focus, qualities that I apply in every aspect of my life," he explains. 

Looking ahead, Chika aspires to achieve financial freedom, allowing him more time to explore his creative passions. "I want to create more, whether that's through coding or additional artistic endeavors," he shares. His vision is clear: to inspire others while continuing to grow personally and professionally. 

As he mentors his own mentee—an aspiring artist with a keen interest in technology—Chika is reminded of his own beginnings. "I want to help him navigate the job market and find opportunities that align with his passions," he says. With each mentoring session, he reinforces the idea that success is not just about individual achievement but about supporting others along the way.

As he continues to break barriers and pave the way for future generations, Chika embodies the spirit of StreetWise—a beacon of hope and resilience in the heart of New York City.
